Ever walk through a toy store and marvel (or barf) at the segregation of girls’ and boys’ toys? No Gender December is a campaign that challenges the gendered corporatization of Christmas by encouraging parents to think outside the (gender) box when they purchase gifts for their children.
‘Cause when we tell kids that they can only play with X or Y toy based on their gender, we are limiting their creativity and reinforcing unhealthy stereotypes (e.g. girls are submissive and superficial, boys are aggressive and physical). As well, it leaves no room for children who identify (or who someday might identify) as trans or genderqueer.
Riley said it right: “The companies who make these [toys] try to trick the girls into buying the pink stuff instead of stuff that boys want to buy, right?” (check out her full video below:)
